A Community-Based Model of Native Ministry Leadership Preparation for First Nations Congregations |
| The Francis Sandy Theological Centre was formed in 1987 by the Native United Church congregations in Ontario and Quebec, the Division of Ministry Personnel and Education and the Division of Mission in Canada of the United Church of Canada. The Late Francis Sandy was an Ojibwa elder and lay pastoral minister from the Christian Island community. Along with a number of elders and others from our area, Francis had a dream that all the Native congregations in Ontario and Quebec would be served by Native ministers. Our centre shares Francis' dream and works with Native persons to equip them for ministry in congregation and community. Purpose: TO TEACH and share ministry with aboriginal people within the United Church of Canada - so that they may share and practice ministry within First Nation communities and the wider church. TO SHARE in an ecumenical and cross-culture enrichment of life with all peoples. TO ENCOURAGE faith communities in which both aboriginal and Christian spiritual beliefs and practices are respected, shared and understood. TO INVITE all who share in this vision of ministry to a common commitment and responsibility that allows ministry to happen. During or Following the FSTC five year program, eligible students can enroll in a Bachelor of Theology in Native Ministry degree sponsored jointly with Queen's Theological College, Kingston, ON. The degree will be awarded upon successful completion of both the FSTC program and five courses at Queen's. The FSTC Acquires the services of many excellent resource persons to help with the teaching of our students and to lead workshops and support/healing groups. The centre is led by Principal, Brenda Simpson. |
